Letting Go of Worry- Week Two
“Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying?” Matthew 6:27 (CSB)
No matter how much planning or worrying we do we can quickly come to realize that we are not in full control of our own lives. Illness, unexpected bills, career changes, schedule issues, weather, loss of relationships, death, and so many other things that are completely out of our control happen daily. When we waste our time and energy worrying about things in our lives, we quickly will find that those anxious thoughts do not change or fix anything. Just like our verse above says in Matthew 6:27, none of us can add a moment to our life by worrying. Worry does the opposite it affects our spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical health negatively, only making things harder for us.
As we look at the scriptures surrounding our featured verse today, in Matthew 6:25-34 we see the words spoken by Jesus. These scriptures are comprised of what is known as His Sermon on The Mount. These scriptures are Jesus teaching his followers how to live their lives according to His purpose. Jesus is telling us repeatedly not to worry about anything because God will meet all our needs. Matthew 6:26 says, “Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?” (CSB). God is telling us we do not need to worry about anything because just like the rest of his creation he has thought of everything, and he will provide for everything we need because he greatly values us!
We have a good and loving God that provides and cares for all our needs. God is perfect, without flaws, and trustworthy. Therefore, we should have faith in His word and not worry about anything. Instead, when we feel that worry creeping in, we should take those worry-filled thoughts to God in prayer. Just like Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (CSB) Sis, we need to take it all to our loving Father and leave it at the foot of the cross and soak in His peace. He will provide everything we need. Stop worrying.
Let’s Pray
Dear God,
Thank you for caring for every detail of your entire creation, including us. Thank you for valuing us as your children. Lord, we know we cannot change our circumstances with our worry, but we can trust in you to provide everything we need. Remind us to let go of worry and anxious thoughts and come to you in prayer first. Father covers us daily in your ever-comforting peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
